| The ASB Library Mission StatementThe mission of the ASB Library is to inspire and support its users towards creative and intellectual achievement while ethically leaning the value of information and its acquisition.
Patrons
All members of the ASB community are considered library patrons. The ASB community is defined as all students, parents and staff that are enrolled or work at ASB. Guests may use library material within the library premises. Volunteers are welcome at the ASB Library. Parents and students interested in volunteering should contact either Barbara Kieran or Heeru Bhojwani. Hours The library is open Monday-Friday from 7:40 am to 4:30 pm. The library is also open on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm(except during vacations and extended weekends). Services and Facilities a.Technology The ES Library provides 8 laptops with Microsoft Office applications, other preset applications, Internet connections, and a printer. All Secondary students have these applications available on their school laptops. Wireless internet access is available throughout the library. The Library catalog and the various online databases that the school subscribes to are all available through the school web site. Web browsers on these computers have multi-language support for the benefit of our international student community. Printers, a scanner, a photocopier and a number of projectors for digital presentations are available in the ASB Library. b. Space usage Within both the ES & SS Library there are quiet, comfortable spaces provided for reading and studying. All mobile phones should be set to the vibrate mode when entering the library and all phone calls should be placed outside the library. All patrons are reminded that the ASB library is generally used for study, research, flex classes and often as a meeting space. To preserve an environment of optimum conditions for study, library personnel may approach patrons to request quiet and orderly conduct. Food and drink other than water are discouraged anywhere in the library, with the exception of sponsored events that include a food and drink setup. c. Events Both libraries host author visits, sponsors book fairs, offer workshops and classes for parents, teachers, and students. Dates for these events are posted on the school website and the school calendar. ASB Library Collection & Resources With the elementary and secondary libraries combined, the ASB Library has a collection of over 25,000 books –print and audio, and DVDs. Within these titles there is a wide collection from picture books to foreign language, nonfiction to graphic novels, and teacher resources. The ASB Library also subscribes to various periodicals, journals, magazines, dvds, cds, audio tapes and playaways and a substantial number of electronic databases. Locating Materials : Access to all library materials is available through the online catalog. This is a web based program and may be accessed through the school web site. Online Databases: The library subscribes to a number of online research and educational databases these are accessed by the students and teachers through the library web page. The copyright for some of these databases may only allow access to students and teachers at ASB. Circulation Services The circulation desks are located just inside the front entrance of each library. A staff member is available during all hours of operation to offer directions pertaining to the location of library resources, assist patrons in learning the strategies for effective information acquisition and provide circulation services. Loan period All library material is available for a standard checkout period of two weeks. There are two exceptions: dvds are allowed a week’s check out and periodicals are allowed a week’s check out for older issues and one night if the issue is of the current month. Return A materials return container or drop box is located at each circulation desk for all library returns. Overdues Overdue notices are emailed to patrons on a regular basis. The library does not charge overdue fines.However if an item is reported missing or is returned seriously damaged, the borrower is responsible for the payment of the cost of the item plus the shipping and processing fees. On receiving a notification from the librarian with book details and cost, this fine is paid to the cashier in the business office. A receipt from the cashier would be required to help clear the fine from the patron’s account. Requests Patrons may request that a material which is already checked out be reserved for them upon its return. An email will be sent to the patron telling them when the material has been returned and is ready for them to check it out. The library will hold a book for 3 days before notifying the next person on the list .Patrons may also request that the library consider purchasing a book or DVD on the library web page.
